Hi World!
I didn't know I was an artist until I was 44. Yeah, just a few years ago, I started treatment for an eating disorder and that meant working on finding out who I truly was. That process, for me, uncovered the truth that the eating disorder had been the reason that my creativity was stifled for nearly three decades.
And as I worked hard at recovery, I learned that I'm not the only one struggling with an eating disorder who squashed their creativity to allow the illness to thrive. It's really very common.
My uncovering began with doodling in my recovery journals, morphed into hand-lettering and eventually I found myself at an easel with a paint brush in my hand. I learned to use my time with my canvases as a way to give my creativity a voice loud enough to quiet the nagging internal voice of the eating disorder.
Since I started recovery, I've published a book, established a close-knit online community of others using art to heal themselves in recovery, and started selling my art.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
I constantly draw on the confidence that I gained when I published my book, The Reflections Journal. The support I received from all over the world for that project continues to inspire me to keep going.
I use collage to start all of my paintings. I find it helps me to break through the fears that come up when staring at a blank canvas. My go-to collage papers are sheet music, maps, and pages from really, REALLY old books.
Travelling to California, USA in 2019 to teach a creative journaling workshop for Project Heal's first weekend sleep-away camp for adults in recovery from an eating disorder was not only an honour, but it changed me.
